Hollow glass microspheres are high-strength borosilicate hollow spherical fillers, serving as core functional sensitizers and density regulators for modern emulsion explosives. Featuring stable closed-cell structure, moderate compressive strength, ultra-low density and excellent chemical inertness, they have gradually replaced traditional sensitizing materials such as expanded perlite and chemical foaming agents, becoming a standard additive for high-stability and high-efficiency industrial emulsion explosive formulations.

The primary application of hollow glass microspheres in emulsion explosives is reliable physical sensitization. The sealed internal air cavities of microspheres form uniform microscopic hot spots inside the explosive matrix. During detonation, these tiny closed voids concentrate instantaneous pressure and energy, enabling the emulsion explosive to achieve stable and complete detonation with consistent blasting velocity and intensity. Compared with chemical foaming that causes unstable bubble loss and perlite that breaks easily, glass microspheres deliver long-lasting and uniform sensitization effect and greatly improve blasting reliability.

Another key application is precise density adjustment and formula optimization. With controllable low density, a small dosage of hollow glass microspheres can accurately reduce the overall density of emulsion explosives. This effectively solves the problems of uneven density and unstable detonation performance caused by traditional fillers. Meanwhile, their rigid spherical structure resists shear force and pressure during mixing, pumping and packaging processes, avoiding structural damage and desensitization, which significantly enhances production stability.

In addition, hollow glass microspheres greatly improve the storage durability and environmental adaptability of emulsion explosives. They feature excellent oil resistance, water resistance and corrosion resistance, maintaining stable physical and chemical properties in long-term storage. They effectively prevent explosive performance attenuation, stratification and failure, extending the valid storage period. Moreover, they help reduce comprehensive formulation costs with lower addition dosage and higher comprehensive efficiency than conventional sensitizers.

Widely applicable in packaged emulsion explosives, bulk mining emulsion explosives and water-gel explosives, hollow glass microspheres have become an essential functional material for upgrading industrial explosive quality, balancing safety, stability and blasting performance for mining, tunnel and infrastructure blasting projects.
